I'm Drop Dead Cynical

Blue eyes narrowed jealously at Rhadra. Here was another who had seemed to be able to grasp and hold onto the innocence and wonder she had held as a child. Adelheid was starting to believe there was something wrong or broken in her, something she was not sure she could repair. There was a fear deep within her about what would happen if she had tried and succeeded, if there would be a crushing of guilt on her soul for not allowing the hope to sink into her in the first place.

She listened intently to the mare’s description of her home. The description was very brief, and to the point, which she appreciated. Though there was something else to the mare. There was a boredom as well as wishing. Adelheid could hear the desire for youth in her voice and was endlessly curious about it. It confounded her, the desire to have children, but she knew it was a driving force for other females. Her dark ears flicked to the smaller woman and for the first time she lost her aggressive stance and allowed herself to take another step closer, slowly letting her guard down and allow herself to taste the curiosity and touch the chance of getting to know someone. After she took the step, her head raised again and her senses continued to roam their surroundings. It was habit.

That sounds… boring. Actually. Her words were as blunt as ever. Possibly a little thoughtlessly so. A memory stirred. In the Peak we had the freedom to come and go as we chose. My… friend… would try to take us on adventures. They would tend to end poorly. At the end of her sentence, Adelheid’s voice fell and her eyes narrowed slightly in sadness at the memory, and regret that she had lost contact with her friend who had been so full of spirit. Filled with the foalish energy Rhadra was talking about.

Adelheid’s tail swished. I have visited the Peak since I have been back. I don’t think they are there anymore. They moved on with their lives. It was not the place for them. Jetta had so much more to live for than what the Peak could have offered her.

What is it about children? she asked, genuinely bewildered and curious. That draw mares, and gives that energy you talk about?
