Not once, but twice he�d failed Primrose. Now he had to either wait till next season (which he absolutely COULD NOT do without losing his sanity) or he�d have to ask for help. He hated the idea of needing someone else to do what he couldn�t, to get Primrose back to safety. He didn�t know Ruger so he didn�t trust him. He couldn�t trust someone who could force a mare from their herd then ask for a replacement mare like a piece of furniture. His mares were much more to him now. He could understand creating alliances and uniting the herds by letting his daughter or sons go to other herds, but not by force. He wouldn�t do that for anyone.

His back leg was sore so he had a limp to his step and he was covered in bruises and cuts from Ruger�s hooves. He also had bites and marks from Vasilissa but he seethed with anger. Anger at himself. As he swam back onto the shores of Salem, he shook out his coat and pawed the soft sand. A rattling snort left his nostrils as he looked around. He heard there was a fight for the lead mare position while he was gone. Geneva won, so he would be giving her the respect due a lead mare, but he worried that his mares hard hurt each other in the challenge. He�d already lost Primrose, though he�d never quit trying to get her back. He wouldn�t lose anyone else to his own neglect. Shaking out his tangled mane, he moved further inland, stopping at the oasis to drink. Looking around, he sniffed the air, wondering who was roaming.
