Her breath came in snorts through her dark nostrils as she struggled to catch it. This other mare was quite a bit taller, and shaped quite differently than what Fjö∂ur was accustomed to seeing. Her hazel eyes drifted up to the stranger’s face. What the…? The mare’s ears were nearly touching each other! This was weird. What sort of strange place had she landed herself in? She glanced inland to her left, and processed for the first time the strangeness of the landscape. This island was just surprise after surprise. She supposed if she kept going, next she’d see hills made of fish. Actually, she thought to herself, it’s too damn hot for that.
The bay mare was on her way to Fjö∂ur’s very tiny good side until she called her “little one”. Her ears pinned against her thick mane and she stiffened her posture as she glared at the other mare. “Just because I’m short doesn’t give you the right to call me little,” she huffed. Before she answered the rest of the question, she had to deal with the heat. Given that they were close to the ocean, she strode over to where the water lapped upon the shore. She tried her best to hide how shaky her legs were, but she probably failed given that she was also unused to treading on sand. She walked until the cool water tickled at her overheated belly, and then turned to glare once again at the bay.
“Nothing is chasing me except my own misfortune. I’m looking for someone, and as soon as I rest a little I can keep going.” She paused a moment, then gestured with her nose at the sandy hills. “What are those, anyway? What is this island called, and why doesn’t it have any trees or grass?” Her tone was rather brash, which she hoped would encourage this stranger to give her the information she wanted.
