bring me back to life...

Even as she tried to put on a brace face against the stallion, she could only keep praying in her head that Requiem was still the kind soul she remembered from the last time they met. She still remembered how she broke his heart when she chose Ruger over him and she didn't know if that hurt would turn into hate. Maybe he'd enjoy breaking her like Valour did, but the part of her that still cared about Requiem wanted to believe he was still the kind stallion she remembered and he would do the right thing. She had to believe that. She couldn't think that he would harm her, at least not in front of Ryder. As they kept looking at each other, she wished she could see what he was thinking. Did he despise seeing her again, maybe think about how it could have been his own son he was looking at instead of Ruger's?

Maybe he would never forgive her for her decision to go to Ruger or maybe he'd already moved on. He was so hard to read sometimes. She tried to look strong even though her legs were shaking likes leaves. She knew Ryder was picking up on her fear so he was more quiet than usual, just clinging to her legs and looking to her for direction. He wouldn't move a muscle unless she asked him to and she took comfort from that. She asked what they wanted with her, figuring it was best to confront them now. Maybe the quicker she let them hurt her or whatever they planned to do to her, the quicker she could escape or find a way to get back to Ruger. She would never quit trying. For a moment, Requiem looked unsure, looking between her and Warsaw. She started to worry that he might not answer, her own ears flicking back in dismay as Requiem only turned to watch Warsaw walk away, as if he was waiting for them to be alone. But why?

She shivered as she feared the worse. But as he turned back to her, she saw only a sadness in his eyes, a sadness that she knew she had put that at one point. Whether it still exited because of her or for a whole different reason, she had no idea. But either way, she knew that he was telling the truth when he said he didn't ask Warsaw to take her. Her ears pricked forward tentatively as he said he didn't want anything from her and that he didn't tell Warsaw why she was gone. So it was a misunderstanding? It wasn't a punishment for leaving him for Ruger? She let out a rattling snort and lowered her head a little, uncertainty in her gaze. Then he told her to wait till Warsaw goes back to the Forest and that she could leave with Ryder. Her head lifted back up at that and hope sprung to life in her eyes as she searched Requiem's expression for any signs of trickery.

Would he really be so cruel to dangle the carrot of freedom then snatch it away? She couldn't believe that of Requiem, not even after what she did to him. He wasn't like that. Her heart told her so. It was hard to read him though when he wouldn't even look at her. Her own expression softened as he continued to stare at the ground, his ears pinned as if he was trying to shut out the world. Letting out a soft breath, she lowered her head again, her voice soft but she knew that he heard her, even if he didn't want to. "I know that I hurt you and I can't apologize enough for that. I can only hope that with time, you can look at me as a friend, at least, cause you have never stopped being mine. I understand if you can never forgive me. I just wanted you to know that I am not oblivious or numb to the things you have done for me and continue to do. I can't thank you enough for this chance you have given me."

Swallowing, she slowly lifted her head and nudged Ryder forward, herding him gently toward the borders toward Luthien and home, all while keeping one ear flicked back in case Requiem spoke again or moved in their direction. She wasn't going to let her guard down, not until they were safely back in the Thicket. She bided her time, knowing they needed to make sure Warsaw was long gone so he wouldn't interfere and take her back. She hated the wait but knew it would do better to be patient than to rush and get caught.
