We found each other

I helped you out of a broken place
One by one, they came to the Dunes. Petite dancers draped in jeweled tones and innate elegance. They were everything she was not and could never be. Uncertainty had twisted within her gut and whispered that he could better.

Who was she?

A woman draped in ash who struggled to adapt to the scorching heat. A woman who hid from prying eyes and chose to embrace the ocean versus getting to know any of the other mares. A woman who could not look Soter in the eye because she believed he would find her lacking.

She was different. If you lined her up against the rest of the mares you could see that she did not belong. Where they were lithe, she was plump. Where they glided across the hot sand, she stumbled and likened herself to an unsteady colt. It was becoming apparent that the blood of desert kings did not run in her veins and Nereid hated it. Why must she be different?

Sadness painted her visage as Nereid watched Bahadir's forms disappear in the distance. It seemed that today would be another day that he went searching for a lost soul. Bitterness caused a laugh to escape her lips and tears to burn at the corner of her eyes. "Gaea, I was such a fool. I do not belong here. What was I thinking? I am not like them."

Once upon a time the gods had warned her that the Dunes were not meant to be her home. Gabbar had brought her to the shores of Salem and she had been stolen within minutes. It had been months since she had graced the Dunes alongside Bahadir but it had been strife with heartache and uncertainty. Perhaps the gods wanted her to pay for her disobedience?

"I am sorry Soter. Forgive me." The words fell from her lips before her frame turned away from the Oasis.

The white mare made for the beach, powerful legs taking her to her destination in what seemed like no time at all. Her pace did not slow as she thundered across the wet sand and plunged into the icy waters. Her breath hissed between her teeth as the cold penetrated down to her bones. It would be a long swim.

Nereid did not pay much heed to the direction in which her legs took her. The only thought she had in mind was to angle away from the Commons and any chance of running into the speckled stallion. She needed this. He no longer needed her.

The sight of a shore in the distance caused Nereid to quicken her pace. The swim had sapped much of her strength and left the pale woman desperate for a chance to rest. Her honey eyes were riveted on the sand, nostrils quivering with each raspy breath. "Poseidon, I beseech thee for assistance. Calm your waves so that I may continue on fate's path."

The first step in shallow waters had Nereid close to falling to her knees. Her frame quivered from exertion, chest heavy with each lungful of air that she took within her lungs. It was a biting morning, snow drifting from the heavens to coat the sand in a light frost. Nereid almost did not want to leave the water fully and embrace the chill of Khione.

It is with reluctance that she glides free of the ocean waves and stands upon the shore of Atlantis. Nostrils quiver as foreign scents assault her nose and cause unease to dance along her spine. "Where have I found myself?" she questioned, looking over her shoulder to peer back at the ocean for strength.
You gave me comfort
but falling for you was my mistake
