Each of his mares were unique but he hadn't gotten to spend as much time with Harlequin as he would have liked. She was his starlet, his spitfire who never turned down a good fight. she didn't give him a child last season but he didn't push it like he could have. He was giving her time to adjust, to figure out what she truly wanted. She could have tried to escape like Leonid did, but she stuck to the outskirts instead. The desert suited her. Cain just wanted her to see it like he did. And she did. She belonged here with every ounce of her being. Maybe this season she would give him a child or maybe she wouldn't. He had all the time in the world to wait. At one time, he thought he needed as many children as he could get. It was a stallion's power, having lineage, after all. But now that he had children, he knew that quantity wasn't power.

He loved his children and he wasn't in a hurry to get more. If he had more, so be it. He would love them too and raise them and guide them to the best of his abilities. But he would be happy with just the three he had if that's all he got in his lifetime. They were perfect. He loved seeing his mares pregnant and happy with him. He loved making them happy. It had become his life's work. He wanted Harlequin to be happy too. He wanted to be the one to make her happy. As he made his way to her, he could sense her watching his every move. It made him feel powerful and vulnerable all at the same time. He held his head high, showing off his battle scars, both old and fresh. His nostrils flared as he got closer. He could smell her excitement and he knew that she wanted him. She was just fighting it.

The idea made his lips twitch as he tossed his head and swished his tail, holding it high like a flag. She said his name and he tilted his head, watching her as he pranced and danced for her entertainment. Finally she came closer, telling him the Desert had grown on her and so did he. His lips tugged into a victorious grin, his eyes twinkling. "Good. You look good here." She would look good anywhere but he wasn't going to tell her that. She probably knew it already. As she tugged at his mane, he smiled softly and let out a snort. Looking her over, he murmured. "The only thing that could make it better would be to see you swollen with child....my child." He moved to brush his lips across her neck, his eyes watching her carefully but with such yearning. "So, will you do me that honor this year, Harlequin? Will you be the mother of my foal?"
