~ each day death crawls into my body

He listens intently as she begins to speak of her past, of her mother and of her father. Her words are foreign to him, especially about Poseidon, who apparently lived in the sea? His ears flick atop his head, but his dark eyes fill with curiosity. Who was this Poseidon? Why would her father be so jealous? He tilts his crown but still listens with intent. He feels joy when she speaks fondly of such memories and she weaves her words so well, he almost feels as if he is a young child at her side.

A soft smile tugs at his lips as she speaks of the crab, and the fond memory of her mother who brought her to the tide pool. They are memories that she cherishes, he can hear it in the way she speaks and the smile that spreads across her ashen lips. He wants to touch his dark lips to her alabaster skin, to feel the warmth and the thunder of her heart. To see the memories of her childhood and to be there to create the new ones with her. But he refrains, as fear bubbles up in his belly... would she pull back? He bites his lips as the thoughts tumble through his mind.

If I have a child of my own again.... I want my dam's legacy to live on."

Her words pull him from his musing, and his breath catches in his throat. She drops her gaze to the sand at their hooves. "That is a honourable thing, Nereid," he breathes into the space between them. But it is not long before she puts space between them. He watches her take her steps to the crab, who now pinches and snaps at her with its claws.

A laugh bubbles past his lips as he watches her jump back from the crab and its display. "Ahh, it seems you are correct. Though he be small, he is fierce," as he steps forward to drop his dark nostrils above the crab's snapping claws. "Tell me more of these gods... Like Poseidon."

He remains close to her but not so close that she feels the need to step away. His dark eyes linger on her, as he waits in anticipation for more of her tales.
