Live through this lie

Was I left behind?
Tell me, tell me I survived.

The sting of raw, opened flesh shot through my body with every step that I took. But I managed to beat back Rougaru and lose track of the bay beast in the darkness. My heart thumped furiously against the confines of my chest, and my whiskered nostrils sucked in shallow breaths. My senses felt ultra-heightened, fueled by the adrenaline that came in the wake of my scuffle with the Paradise brute. Rougaru is just one of my enemies in this fight, and despite the atrocities he'd committed against my allies and me personally, he was hardly the ring leader in all this chaos. It wasn't his blood I needed to spill tonight.

It was Warsaw's.

So as our gaggle disbanded, with Celestria's lifeless body left alone as the dust settled, I nipped at Jabari in an attempt to tell him not to follow Rougaru. My son looked stunned - probably by the carcass of the mare who'd brought his child into this world - so I bit him again. "Pay attention to me." I said with a snort. This was not the time for Jabari to fall apart on me, no matter how horrendous the circumstances were. His blue eyes shifted to me, but they weren't in focus. "Find Caesisus. Try to get everyone to the Thicket who doesn't need to be here." I barked with the toss of my heavy head.

Jabari's pink chin reached for my bleeding shoulder. He tapped me gently, then turned on his haunches and galloped off into the trees.

Standing still for just a few minutes lead the aches and the pain to creep further into my ailing muscles. My brown eyes reeled back into tight slits as I shifted my weight and urged myself forward, pushing through the pain and slipping into the canopy of trees. My nostrils continued to flare as I searched the dead air for the familiar musk of the grey stallion. It didn't take long for me to catch a hint of him, and I let it guide my path forward. Every so often I'd catch the smell of someone else - of a mare - of Vita Nova, and I halt in place. Would Warsaw really allow his Queen, my sister, to come here? After he'd harbored her away from us in the Inlet for so long? My heart raced even more at the thought, and I grit my teeth. Tonight, one of us would not be left standing. Vita Nova would finally come home.

Finally, I spied him, his wide grey form standing idly among a clearing in the trees. I studied him from within the brush for a moment, concealing my form as I assessed the wounds that already marred his coat. It looked as though Persephone and Evren had gotten to him first. Despite his beaten appearance, the stallion still stood tall. I emerged from the shadows of the trees and watched as Warsaw registered me with a flick of his ear and then the slow turn of his body. My heavy head came to rise high over my withers, and I stared down my nose at the stallion. I watched him as he pawed at the moist earth below his hooves and my ears laced tightly at my poll. "This ends tonight, Warsaw." I barked at him, and followed it with a snort.

Then I parted my lips, and emitted a gurgling, hoarse cry, loud enough for Jabari to hear, or Evren or Persephone, and my forelegs kicked out at the ground to propel me forward.
