enigma

Enigma thinks back, not entirely convinced she had won lots of times before. After all, everything was a game to her, and in the game of life, Saffron had her beat!

But then the air changed. A storm gathered--not a physical one, but one that dimmed the sparkle in Saffron’s aged eyes. One that Enigma had only seen a few times in the past and one that really made her want to duck and cover. She took a nervous step to the side, jolting her head high as her jaw worked, wanting to run but knowing that running wasn’t really an option--if Saffron needed her, she had to be here. Oh dear.

Oh dear.

Saffron laced into Liland with all the vigor of a mare half her age. Saffron had the age and experience over both the other horses gathered on the shores of the Bay this afternoon, and that on its own demanded respect. Apparently, Liland wasn’t willing to provide that. The thunder that came from the old mare’s mouth made Enigma flatten her ears, wincing every once in a while. It might have made her giddy any other time to hear Saffron call her her’s, but now she just felt uncomfortable. Right now, she wanted to shrink away until she became the tiniest of blips on someone else’s radar.

She took another nervous step back, her tail lashing against her hocks.

Big. Heckin'. Yikes.
