Meltable

Melisma

The boy was cute, there was no denying that, and he made a smile touch her dark lips in a way that hadn’t happened in a long time. The typical worry lines disappeared for an amused look, a chuckle threatening to leave her as he stood tall, trying to be impressive. Though she had only met Cain briefly, she wondered if this behavior had been learned from him? Her thoughts were shattered as another mare approached, making Melisma take a few steps further aside to place a better distance between them. As she was addressed with an apology, the dark mare gave a nod, but she did not try to stop the woman. Was this the one Cain had spoken of when they had met in the Meadow that night? She wondered if he would be pleased to know she was free or upset that she was not ready to come home.

Melisma’s ears swept back in uncertainty then, seconding guessing her decision to come here. Though she knew every horse should be able to expression their emotions, the idea of seeing Cain angry or upset made her heart start to hammer with fear. The black mare did not want to bare witness to any such mood, even if it wasn’t directed at her. Melisma had to remind herself that she was not alone and turned her green eyes over to the colt. He carried a heavy responsibility for having to deliver such news, surely she should not be so afraid if such weight could be placed on his shoulders?

“Akello.” she murmured, bottling up her own emotions so they wouldn’t be on full display. “I actually came looking for your father. Perhaps we can go find him together?” Melisma asked with a smile. It was not that she was trying to treat him like a child, but that she didn’t want him to carry the weight alone. Nor did she think she could find the painted stallion without the boy’s help.
