  • The King and Queen have final say in all matters.
Dive deep in dark blue, my sweet

In the land of gods and monsters,
MAZARINE
I was an angel

As the days wear on, winter turns to spring. Mazarine is getting used to her new desert home. She grows accustomed to the taste of dry, desert grasses, and has found a few hidden sources of water tucked away among the dusty landscape. Shade is scarce and mares heavy with child seem to need what little of it is available more than Mazarine does, so she lets them have it. Time in the sun has begun to bleach the fire-red ends of her mane blonde. By summer she will burn the color of the sun, and appear almost flaxen.

Mazarine hates this time of year. Mares that are still pregnant suffer from both their increasing size and the increasing temperatures. They are too moody to be enjoyable company. Once they deliver, their attitudes remain similarly undesirable. They are exhausted from labor and delivery, and then struggling to keep up with their energetic new charges. New mothers are both irritable and over-protective.

Foals themselves are an enigma to Mazarine. She has no idea how to communicate with them. They're both annoying, and needy. Why anyone would do something like that to themselves is beyond her comprehension. Mazarine just hopes Cain doesn't expect her to carry one of his foals into next spring. She has never been more disinterested in becoming a mother.

The young mare has found her time in the Desert, thus far, to be exceptionally disappointing. A single conversation with Zubeia proved to be as dry and uninteresting as the Desert itself, and she finds herself otherwise stranded in the middle of the world's most uncomfortable maternity ward. This is not her scene.

Mazarine is desperate for some adult companionship when she finds a pair of strangers gathered on the beach. The male is tall and handsome, built for the terrain on which they live. His sandy-colored coat is the perfect camouflage. It's not the stallion that catches her eye though. It's the mare. She is the color of fresh snow at sunrise, aglow with the rosy light of a new day and cast with the long shadows of morning. She is every bit as beautiful. Her face is marred with a bloody marking, an imperfection that serves only to enhance her beauty and add interest to a face already interesting.

Mazarine ambles along the shoreline at a leisurely pace, making no secret of her approach. She is a bright red beacon on the sand, working her way nearer. She turns her head as she walks, enjoying the cool, ocean breeze. She lets the wind comb her mane and dry the sweat off her neck. Her nostrils flare, and her rib cage expands, breathing deep the smell of the ocean, a smell always familiar, no matter what beaches you walk.

She turns her attention back to the pair of strangers, their figures coming into detail. Short legs make quick work of shifting sands, and carry her within conversational distance. Mazarine waits for a lull in the conversation before speaking up. Hello. I don't mean to interrupt, but I don't believe we've met. I'm Mazarine.

Mazarine is built narrow and lean, proportioned like a much larger horse, but she is impossibly small. Some might wonder if she is aware of her own size. She is, but she doesn't let it hold her back. Mazarine is a social creature and won't let fear become her isolation. Her stance is open and amiable. Her ears prick forward and her eyes shine with eager expectation.
