snakes hide in the grass

Nagenra hasn't given all of it much thought. He's so desperate for some excitement in his sheltered little life that he will accept any truth, whether it's the whole truth or not. Hannah isn't gray, so Nagendra assumes he gets his color from her side of the family, and who knows what colors are hiding under Warsaw's grayed-out coat. Nagendra doesn't know and he doesn't care. News like this puts a new spin on his otherwise stagnant world.

Nagendra isn't too concerned with how it all happened either. As a colt, he's been watching all the stallions trolling through their forest. Some stallions are polite like Tarek, but many of them aren't. They do what they want, and they take what they want. Warsaw sounds like a role model to look up to. He doesn't sit idly by and wait for the world to come get him. He gets up and takes charge. He wanted Hannah, so he took her, and that's that. Nagendra doesn't think any less of his mother for it, but perhaps thinks less of his father. Where was Tarek in all of this? He certainly wasn't protecting Hannah the way he should. Nagendra doesn't want to grow up to be like that. This is why he wants a new teacher, someone who will show him how to be a real man and hold on to his mares.

"Yeah Bella. We are young. We wouldn't win a fight now, but if we don't start learning, then we never will." The colt answers his sister with authority in his voice. He stamps a hoof for emphasis. "Now is the time to start learning. We're ready. I'm ready." He shakes his head, wondering where all this uncertainty is coming from. Where is the brave girl that stood up to Cullen? "Of course I don't hate mother, Bella. I love mother, but we're getting older now. I think it's time we take control of our own lives."

Their conversation carries them along a winding path between the trees. The soil of the forest gives way to more sandy ground and soon the path opens up, onto the beach. Like this path, they once walked a narrow course, guided by their parents, so deeply rooted here in the forest, but opportunity has opened up before them. They look out over the wide blue ocean. The horizon beckons them to explore beyond the safety of their forest home. It's time to grow up. It's time to get out. The world is calling and Nagendra can't wait to answer.

With stars in his eyes, Nagendra looks into the worried face of his sister. "Come on Bella. Let's say goodbye to mother and go."
