He knew Geneva did the right thing by taking the foals away. She wouldn't have been able to protect all of them. If he knew anything about Zubeia, she probably gave herself up as a sacrifice so they could get away. It still didn't make her loss any easier. He had successfully drove out the wolves but he lost a mare. A mare he swore to protect. He'd heard Geneva's cries for him to stop when he took off but he couldn't just leave Zubeia. Even if she was already gone, she didn't deserve to be food for the wolves who took her from this world. She deserved better than that. Cain knew he had to drive them away now or they would try to hunt on Salem and his herd would never truly be safe. He had to hurt them now. He had the anguish of loss behind him for aide so he used it to ignore the bites that riddled this legs as he attacked the wolves over and over again. A few got his face when he was latching onto them with his teeth and tossing them like ragdolls but he ignored the blood trickling into his eyes and nostrils. The taste was addictive on his tongue and he gave into his bloodlust for a moment, letting all the anger out as he lashed out at them until they were limping and crawling back into the water. He hoped they died on the swim back. He didn't even hear Geneva approach as he laid across Zubeia's body, silently crying. One ear flicked back when she spoke, saying they couldn't stay there. He shook his head vigorously. "We can't leave her like this, Geneva. The kids will see her. We should bury her." He heard her say that she failed her and he snorted, looking up at her. "No, you saved the children. That's what she would have wanted." He was sure of it. He blinked away the tears and looked around for a moment. The kids? He had a moment of panic before remembering she'd taken them away, and Scarecrow was there. She must have left them with him. he snorted and looked back up at her. "The kids need you, Geneva. I'll take care of her. Please." With that, he slowly pulled himself up with a grunt of pain. Carbon was successfully distracted from his growing hunger when the filly tossed her head and tried to nip back at him. Now it was a game! He grinned and jerked his own head out of reach, trying again to nip at her neck or chest now. This was fun! But his growling stomach reminded him that he had yet to nurse. With a snort, he looked around. Where did his mother go? She was just here and then she wasn't. He gave out a little nicker, hoping she could hear him. Then he remembered the tall stallion was still there. His ears pricked as he looked up at the slender male. Who was he? He didn't seem to mean them any harm or his mother wouldn't have left them with him, right? He tilted his head as the stallion told them to stay close, his little tail swishing as he glanced again in the direction his mother had gone. Was she coming back? Snorting, he ventured closer to the stallion, sticking his little nose up to the male's chest. Hm, did he have food? Nuzzling the male's skin, he started to explore some more, checking between his front legs and in his girth area. Where the heck was the food?
