She tried to keep an eye on the blue paint colt as he made his way around the island but she knew that she needed to let him explore on his own too. She made sure to make it known to others that he was welcome here, flattening her ears in warning if any thought to give him a funny look when they saw him wandering around. The threat in her eyes was clear: mess with him and you have to deal with a hormonal preganant mare. She knew her birthing date was drawing close but she couldn't help but keep an eye on him. She felt a connection to him and now that she'd taken him under her wing, she considered him her responsibility. She just wished she knew what to call him. They had to figure out a better way to communicate. She kept trying to track him around Paradise and was always relieved when she came across a fresh trail. Just knowing he was still here was enough to set her mind at ease. She wanted him to feel safe here.

She was grazing and trying to ignore the incessant cramps that had been plaguing her for days when she heard the cry and something in the voice sounded familiar. Could it be the colt? The sound reminded her of the scream he'd given when she was trying to communicate with him the first time. Ears pricked, she gave a snort and trotted toward the sound, knowing he probably wouldn't hear her if she responded anyway. She had come to the conclusion from their last interaction that the colt was probably deaf. He could make sound; that much was obvious, so he wasn't a mute. He looked confused when she spoke to him, like he couldn't hear her. So she surmised he was deaf. As she got closer, she heard another call, this time louder. What was he doing, trying to wake the whole island?

Her eyes twinkled with some amusement at the idea as she kept going. When she finally saw him through the trees, her heart sped up and her eyes lit up with joy. He looked like he'd been eating well, his body filling out nicely. He would be a handsome thing when he got older, but of course she already considered him a son. Since she knew he wouldn't hear her, she looked for where his eyes were looking and tried to get directly in front of him so he would have a better chance of seeing her. Tossing her head to give him plenty of movement to draw attention, she stopped a few feet away and dipped her head, making sure to give him that same smile to let him know everything was okay. Her ears pricked forward and she gave a little swish of her tail, waiting to see if he could remember her.
