There is a stillness to the morning that does not abide in any other part of the day or night. A slow rising of light along the horizon slips unnoticed by morning birds and bids peaceful slumber to the creatures that prowl the night. But he does not sleep, and he does not wake. Morning dew settles onto his skin, desaturating the inky black of his mane and tail to a crystalline gray as the moisture settles on the surface of the hair. Spring mornings are still cold and his breath plumes into the mist the falls create. He does not sleep. He does not wake. But he breathes - however shallow.

The falls rumble with the burden of snowmelt - a reverating voice that rattles the heart in his chest. He wanders nearer, breaking that hallow stillness of the early morning. His worn hooves clack wetly against exposed stone where the moss no longer grows for the abuse of travellers. The mist of the falls rises to greet him, dressed in pinks and golds as it plays in horizontal light.

The air is thick here, and somehow he finds the weight of it grounding. He does not fight it, though he has been adrift for so long. He too still wears the salt of the sea on his hide - feels the rush of the ocean pouring into his lungs and sinking him like a stone�

The brightness of her eyes as she turns to look at him is startling. He hadn�t meant to come so close - hadn�t realized he was not alone with the ferns and the dermestids and the furor of the falls. But his reaction is minimal - a twitch of neck muscles that may have caused his head to jolt upwards if he were any less fragmented.
