He could only look on and smile knowingly as Cerosi all but dunked her head into the water of the oasis, drinking her fill. He stood by quietly while they drank and ate if they wanted to before going on. Then she asked about the Desert and he smiled, looking around. "I actually picked it, believe it or not." He smirked and snorted, knowing most probably wouldn't pick this place to live in if they had a choice, especially a draft breed like himself. His gaze softened as he continued. "I spent most of my life in a dirt pen so I adapted to it and I believe that a harsh environment builds the toughest herd. If you can survive here, you can survive anything." He shrugged. Maybe some wouldn't believe that, but he'd seen his herd endure so much and come out of it whole.

Then came the tougher questions. She asked how he met his herd. His gaze grew sad and he even ducked his head a little, shame entering his gaze. But he'd been honest with everyone so far and he wasn't going to stop now. "I will admit, the first part of my herd wasn't met on the best terms. I was a different stallion when I first came to the islands, half starved and feral from time in captivity for years of my life. I knew only violence and because of my own imprisonment, it gave me a fierce sense of wanting everything, anything. The first mare that came to my herd, Primrose, ended up here by accident then I forced her to stay and also forced her to carry my child." His gaze darkened at the memory and he knew he would face harsh judgement for it but he knew he deserved every bit of it. With a heavy sigh, he went on.

"I met another mare in the Meadow, Everglow. She was blind and I wanted to build my herd so I tried to drive her to the desert. She put up a fight and another mare, Vihaan, intervened to help her. In the end, Vihaan made a deal with me to come to the desert if I left Everglow alone. I accepted." Admiration for Vihaan shone in his eyes as he spoke of her, even as his heart constricted with guilt over what he put her and Everglow through. "In the deal, Vihaan said she would carry my children so once again, I made her keep her word. " He knew they would understand what that meant and his ears flattened in shame once more. "I have since worked for their forgiveness and tried to rebuild a relationship created from shambles. Primrose was stolen from me last fall and I fought twice for her freedom and was denied. She is free now but wants to visit with her family before she decides her next course of action. Hopefully you will get to meet her some day."

He knew the ball was in her court and he was torn on the inside between wanting her home and wanting her to truly know the freedom he stole from her in the first place. He ached for his daughter Paisley and to see how much she had grown but he was giving Primrose the right to say how much he would be in her life. He knew giving her space was the best he could do now. They had started toward trust in that time she was pregnant and he'd been there for her during her birthing, trying to do the best he could by her. He could only hope in the end it was enough. Having been lost in his thoughts, he shook his head and gave another snort before looking at the mares again. "Vihaan and I grew close after she came to the desert. She wanted to make sure her family in the Prairie was safe during the war that ravaged the islands so I let her go. Our son, Akello, is still in the desert so you might come across him." He knew as outgoing as their son was, there was no way they wouldn't meet him unless they actively avoided him.

Sighing, he continued. "The others were on much better terms. Geneva approached me during the fall and wanted a child so I indulged her. She then followed me back to the desert and has since been here. She has given me two sons, Legolas, and more recently, Carbon. She challenged for the lead mare position and beat her opponent so now she holds that title. The mare who took her challenge, Harlequin, was in the Common when I approached her. She decided to come with me and has since been here as well. She is now appointed Guardian of the desert. I also approached a stallion, Scarecrow, who has joined my herd and will soon be my second. He's an older stallion but is very level headed and has interesting stories of his past. If you see him around, don't hesitate to say hi. I'm sure he'd enjoy the company. A mare recently came to find me that I first approached in the meadow, Melisma. She seems shy and underappreciated but I'm hoping to change that. She hasn't officially joined the herd yet." Hope shone in his eyes but he would let her be the final judge.

He smiled again. "And last but certainly not least, I invited another mare from the Common, Mazarine, to come here." He could tell that Cerosi might only be getting started with the questions but that's okay. That's why he was here, after all. He watched the growing friendship between the two mares and was happy for them to have each other. He still wished many of his own herd mares would reach out to one another. Nasa turned to him, telling him the desert was familiar to her and he smiled with a nod. "Good. I hope you can think of this place as home at some point. The desert would be lucky to have either or both of you." He let his gaze wander between the two mares before stepping back and tilting his head. "Would you like to look around some more?" Maybe they'd want to stay here for a moment and ask more questions or he could show them more of the herd lands. Hopefully they didn't outright hate him now for admitting his past transgressions. He was working his hardest toward redemption and he knew he always would be.
