Pike wasn't made for inertia. Even at rest, the filly was almost constantly in motion - red tail batting the air, ears twitching amidst the unruly tangles of her mane. Green eyes flitting between the things that most captured her attention - which was just about anything that moved. Her mother had always complained that she was as 'fidgety as a fly on a buffalo's ass' - whatever that was supposed to mean. Pike figured it was just another one of those things that adults made up, like when they'd told her that if she kept the mud on too long, she'd turn brown forever.

She was still sore about painstakingly scraping off that thick layer of clay she'd rolled in days ago only to find that her coat was still mostly white underneath.

In any case, by the time the colt approached the white-and-red filly, she'd rolled herself on her back with her front limbs tucked up against her chest and her back limbs sticking almost straight up into the air. At first she didn't even notice the boy's approach, so completely was she engrossed in the progress of a ladybug that was climbing a blade of grass nearby. Then his shadow blotted out the patch of sun she'd been basking in, and his piping voice broke the silence. Are you new here? If Pike's mother had been here, she probably would've grumbled about no one enjoying peace and quiet anymore. The filly, on the other hand, gave an excited - and almost-imperceptible - wag of her tail, looking up at the boy from her back.

"Yeah, I guess I am!" Pike shrilled, causing the nearest individual to the pair to put his ears back and retreat a few paces further away. As usual, the girl scarcely noticed the agitation of the adults surrounding her - she was too busy gazing up at the colt. From her odd perspective, he looked so big... it was no wonder most bugs found them scary! "The grass gets your itches good, but mostly I was just watching a bug. She was right there and-" Pike gave a horrified gasp, rolling over quickly and springing up onto all fours to frantically search the ground.

"She's gone, where did she go - oh no, I think you stepped on her and killed her, poor miss Lady Bug!" By the time she spoke the last few words the chestnut-maned youngster was inconsolable, sobs weaving between the broken syllables of her sentence. It was of little consequence to her that each was probably responsible for a dozen such deaths a day - as far as Pike was concerned, Lady Bug had been her only friend here, and now she was gone forever.
