Maybe once he would have only thought of mares as those meant to be possessed and to carry his genes, raise his future sons and daughters and spread his lineage throughout the islands. That used to be his dream. But oh, how it had changed in such a short time, it seemed. Now, he knew the true strength of mares and the burdens they carried. He had seen and fought with mares who held their own as well as any stallion and he'd been beat by one. He would never forget it and the humbling experience had left him only more in awe of the magic that made up a mare. There was also a time he would have threatened another foal, especially a colt, knowing it wasn't his. But those days were long past and he looked upon the dark colt only with a sense of both joy and sadness all at the same time. He may never see Carbon do such antics and it broke his heart. The mare seemed at least a little more calm by the fact that he stopped a few feet away, giving them space so they didn't feel crowded.

He was quick to offer his name and an apology, having not meant to startle them or think themselves in danger. The mare, anyway. The colt seemed like he could care less. The thought made Cain's eyes twinkle if only for a moment in amusement. The mare seemed to regard him for a moment but he didn't straighten or show off like he might have in months past. His shoulders were still slumped in defeat, his ears almost droopy and his eyes duller than they've ever been. His coat still shone with health and glow but nothing glowed from the inside anymore. All that had been taken from him and was still in the process of being taken. She said that a boy should stay close to his mother and and he dipped his head in acknowledgement. "That would be the wise thing, but most colts I know are head strong and think they know better. I admit that I can think no less of them for it." Her next question hit more on the nail head and he felt himself flinch.

He sighed, looking down for a moment as his tail flicked at his flanks. "When your own lands feel empty of such joy, I guess it would seem magical to see it once more." He closed his eyes for a moment, pushing down the pain before he decided he had nothing to lose by telling her. "I had a son and a daughter not even a week ago. Both healthy and new to the world, so full of life. Now my daughter is in the ground and my son suffers from starvation and the loss of a mother. I fear I shall lose him soon enough." The tears threatened to glisten in his dark brown eyes as he admitted his fears, not knowing why he would tell a stranger but somehow he was sure a mother would understand. The mare gave her name as Berit and her son's name as Vulcan. Cain let his eyes sweep over them both politely before he dipped his head in acknowledgement.

"A pleasure to meet you both. I am Cain and I call the Desert home."
