here to save the princess

He loved the way her pregnant body glowed with every step but he hated that she was hurting. He could see it in the swelling of her legs and the slow way she walked, as if walking on rocks. He hated it for her but worried more than anything that if this went on for much longer, he'd have a lot more to worry about. He wouldn't lose Talien; he couldn't survive without her. He was as sure of that as his next breath. She was his lifeline and if anything ever happened to her, he would lose it completely. He could see the concern in her own eyes as she watched other mares with their newborn foals but he tried not to let her see his own concern. He needed to be strong for her. That's what he kept telling himself. When she looked at him, he had a hard time deciphering what she was thinking. Was she still thinking about that last herd meeting?

Would she forgive him for his moment of darkness or would it be too much of a painful reminder of what he was capable of? Would she never fully trust him again? He knew at some point they would have to talk about it, but right now all he could think about was getting her through this pregnancy alive. He hated that she didn't tell him about Liland and what he'd done to her, but at the same time, he could understand why she didn't tell him. She knew he would go after Liland, no matter what she said. Now the cream stallion was gone from the islands, possibly never to be heard from again. And he wouldn't go outside the islands just to find the stallion. No, that would mean leaving Talien and he would never do that.

So as hard as it was going to be, he had to let it go. He just hadn't figured out how to do that just yet. The spring in Paradise had been a good move for Dex. He'd never felt more in shape and knew his coat gleamed with health. He just wanted the same for Talien. When she approached him, he turned his head, eyes melting immediately at the sight of his beloved as she told him their unborn son was stubborn like his dad. He chuckled despite himself and tossed his head as he raised a brow at her. "Oh yeah? You that sure it's not a stubborn filly like her mother?" As if bringing the action to life, Talien suddenly looked off and Dex's head tilted in puzzlement. "You okay, darling?" The question had scarcely left his lips when suddenly the mare collapsed to the ground. Gasping in shock, Dex immediately went to stand by her, protective and vigilant.

Once he understood what was happening, he only tensed up more, waiting with bated breath as she pushed and did what nature intends. It was his first time getting to watch and he was both mesmerized and a little disturbed by it all. But in the end, he was in awe of the sight of mother and son both healthy and alive before him. He gave a soft whicker of welcome to the colt before nuzzling Talien's forelock gently, lipping at her forehead in a soft kiss. "You scared me to death, princess." He whispered even as she teased the colt for the same thing. Then he looked over the golden colt and grinned in his pride. He turned back to his mate. "I stand corrected. Stubborn colt, after all. What should we name him?"
