But will he be safe from you? Ylva thinks as Warsaw retreats. Once he is gone, relief flows through her aching body, weakening her resolve. Ylva waddles the short distance back to the water and drinks long and deep, even as its acrid stench lingers in her nostrils. --- She is back beneath the shade of a tree when Torsten finds her, knees locked and bump resting against the sturdy trunk. While the dizziness of dehydration is gone, a deep, intense lethargy weighs down her bones, and there is a strange shimmering to the air that no amount of blinking can chase away. She is slow to react to her son, watching his approach with a strange, detached wonder as bursts of color and light dance around him. Time seems to jump in fits and starts, slow one moment - with the sensation she is under water - and lightning-quick the next. “Torsten,” she murmurs with a weary smile, her tongue thick and clumsy in her mouth. Her son is beside her then, supporting her frame with his own, and she leans into him gratefully, burying her face into his rusty-red hair and inhaling his familiar scent. Her smile crumbles into a frown at his words, however. “No, no,” she protests with a feeble shake of her head, her words slow and slurred. “Not him. Want to talk about you. How are you? Oh, I’ve missed you so much.” Her voice breaks and she presses her face into his hair again. “Why did you have to go? Why did you have to leave me? All my children… gone… herd… all gone…” Her voice rises into a thin wail, then falls again to a near-whisper. “And he’s going to be a father, he says. Why wouldn’t he tell me?
