Zjeena's heart breaks for these two foals and whatever tragedy separated them from their parents. And she is thoroughly impressed by the young colt's courage and selflessness. His concern for his sister is unwavering and strong. He is brave and even more compassionate, qualities lacking in stallions ten times his age. Zjeena can imagine the fine young stallion he should someday grow to be.
The foals are both afraid to make such bold requests, but Zjeena offers reassurance in the form of resolute kindness. She thaws their cold uncertainty with the warmth of her breath and gently urges them to drink. The filly is the first to make a move. She struggles to her feet, encouraged by her brother's concern. After whatever she's been through, the task isn't easy but the young filly finds a teat and begins to nurse.
The sensation gives rise to a flood of emotions inside Zjeena. She was a mother, consumed by sorrow and left alone with no children to care for, and here, on this dark and lonely stretch of beach, Zjeena finds someone who needs her love and care. As she offers her warmth, a warmth rises within her. A great sadness gives way to peace, and the pressure of a full udder is relieved by the hungry suckling of healthy foals. Tears spill from her eyes, but no longer are they tears of pain and loss. They are tears of joy and sweet relief.
Zjeena nods at each "thank you" in turn, struggling to form the words. She should be thanking them too. They have no idea how they have saved her. The mare breathes deep, long, slow breaths to soothe her own emotions. Again, she finds her voice. "I'm Zjeena, and this is Paradise." The mare motions behind her, to the vast jungle waiting beyond the sands. As both foals finish their meal, Zjeena rouses them once more. "Come. You both should rest. Let's find a safe place for you to lie down."
