He waited patiently as her green eyes traveled all over his face. He wondered for a moment what she might be seeing, thinking. Could she imagine the monster that used to live in his place? He never wanted to be that way again. This way was so much better. She explained that she was offering herself to trade and then offering to be in foal. She considered that to make her childish and he scowled thoughtfully, his gaze soft. "We'll have to agree to disagree, I'm afraid. I don't see anything childish about sacrificing yourself to go to a strange land with a strange stallion for a mare you don't even know. I also don't see anything childish about offering your body to house and produce a new life into this world. You are brave, Melisma. That's all I see." He knew he might not be able to make her see it as plainly as he did, but perhaps over time, he could work on it with her.

At her confession, his head raised a little in surprise and his nostrils flared in distaste. He knew of the place, though he'd never been there himself. He also knew of its reputation for treating mares like property and calling them "trinkets." It explained a lot about how she was, then. As she looked away from him, he lowered his head, reaching his muzzle out as if to comfort her but he didn't step closer, leaving the decision completely up to her on whether she'd accept his gesture or not. Pain flickered in his eyes, hating to think of someone so kind being in a place like that. She said that mares meant nothing and she wanted more for her child. He shook his head at her question. "Wanting more for your child could never be wrong." He could see so much emotion on her chiseled features and it hurt him not to know exactly the words to say to wash it all away.

Her next words stung a little, his head drawing back as his eyes widened. She just kept surprising him with the fire she held under those soft green eyes. He gave a soft snort, his ears flicking back in dismay. "Yes, all my children mean the world to me. All are important and I would gladly give my life for any of them. They are individuals and each will grow up to do something great, whether it's to lead a herd themselves or to raise strong children for the future or to advise and guide someone, live for the battle, held someone in need...the possibilities are endless. I want only the best for them." His brow lifted as he tried to read her expression. He was at a loss for what she truly needed right now. He wanted to be honest with her, but he wanted his honesty to be what she wanted to hear, too. It was a fine line he was walking and he hated to think she would leave this conversation unsatisfied.

His gaze set in determination as he lifted his head to meet her green eyes once more. "Melisma, I wish you could see how much potential I see every time I look at you. I wish you could see the mare I see before me. Then you would never have a doubt for the value I see in you or anything you could bring to me and my herd. I would be blessed to have a foal you carried. I am blessed and humbled to even be in your presence. Maybe in time you'll give yourself more credit. I can only hope you let me stick around long enough to see it." His lips curled into a small smile, his eyes twinkling again with renewed hope.
