She probably could have spelled out exactly what she wanted from him and Cain would still doubt himself, not because she wasn't worth it, but because he didn't think HE was worth it. In many ways, Cain would never get past the shadow of his past and he didn't think he would ever really stop hating himself for it either. He'd fathered children since and it wasn't forced, but when a mare came to him for breeding, he always second guessed himself now. Could a mare as great as Berit really want him as a father to her child? Sure, she had Vulcan and he was the male role model for him and then Carbon, his own son by blood and she'd taken care of him as well as any. By all means, they had children together already, just not by both. He hoped in time to change that but he didn't want to push that on Berit. She was still raising two boys of her own and he knew they were a handful. Would she want to be pregnant on top of all that?

But the more she spoke, the more he saw that's exactly what she wanted and his heart skipped a beat at the thought of seeing her glowing and pregnant with his child. He liked everything about the sooty mare and he wouldn't want her any different. She was sturdy but not a draft build like himself. He knew he wouldn't hurt her like with Zubeia and her tiny form or Harlequin and her dancer build. He only saw growing interest as he responded and he liked what he was seeing. His skin started to heat up and he felt his breath growing more shallow as the conversation went on. When he spoke of her being a mother to his child, that's when he really sensed a change in the air. The idea crossed his mind: Berit loved being a mother. He should have seen it sooner. The way she looked at Carbon and Vulcan when they played and ran around.

She loved every minute of it. As he moved closer, things seemed to go still and yet he could feel and smell everything about her in those moments. He spoke the words and waited with bated breath. When the word came, he sighed and dipped his head, letting her know he heard before he crossed to her flanks. With a grunt, he moved to lift himself onto her, trying to be gentle with his weight as he let his fore legs wrap around her thick torso. Waiting for her to shift or brace if needed, he would do his duty before lowering himself from her form. His breathing was more ragged but his eyes were bright with satisfaction as he moved to her side, running his muzzle softly along her barrel and neck to make sure she was okay. He nuzzled in her mane, breathing in her sweet perfume.
