PERSEPHONE

There is a moment, just a split-second of stillness in the air between them as the weight of each other’s words settles onto their shoulders. Persephone’s breath caught in her throat, choked by her anticipation. Her heart thrummed against her chest with a ferocity that seemed to match the pace of a hummingbird’s wings.

When Evren lets out a laugh and her eyes begin to glisten with tears, Persephone felt relief wash over her like a tidal wave. For a moment, it was all she felt, numb with the realisation that she had not ruined everything. Then, slowly, another feeling began to creep in – a tingle that started deep within her and seemed to be making its way to the surface of her body, threatening to burst out of her.

Happiness. Joy.

She felt her own eyes prick then, and was glad as Evren reached towards her. She accepted her touch gratefully, for the first time not feeling that she had to hold back or pull away before she forgot herself. Mirroring her companion, she pressed the side of her face against Evren’s neck, inhaling the sweetness of her scent as she rubbed her nose against her skin.

Those few moments of quiet, physical contact were the happiest Persephone could remember, aside from the birth of her children. She made no move to retreat or stir, only flicking her ears as Evren began to speak again before she pulled away. Persephone pulled her head back so that she could look at her, though she remained close.

Sephine.

Persephone could not explain how Evren’s offer made her feel, so she did not try. Tears welled in her eyes again, and a slightly trembling smile pulled at her lips.

“There would be no greater honour, Evren.”

She reached for her again.
