He couldn't bring himself to leave the Desert even if he wanted to. He chose this place when he came to the islands. It was home to him more than anywhere else and he couldn't picture himself ever being happy if he wasn't here. This was where he'd started his new life as a wild stallion, where he'd built his herd from scratch and started a family. Where he'd made mistakes then tried to redeem his past. Where he'd found love and most likely lost it. A prt of him ached to follow Vihaan and convince her to change her mind and stay. Didn't she know how he felt about her? How was there ever any doubt? Was it because he never said the words? Was it because he wasn't here to keep his claim on the Desert? Maybe she saw him as weak now that a young mare had taken the throne. Maybe she felt he wasn't good enough for her now. He dropped his head at the thought, because he couldn't argue with it. He'd never been good enough for Vihaan. Maybe now she finally saw it for herself.

Meanwhile, he had no idea what to expect from the mare who took the Desert right out from under his nose. Would she gloat about claiming his land? Would she hold it over his head that she could kick him out? Would she be unfair to his herd? He certainly hoped not, but he felt powerless to stop any of it and he didn't like feeling powerless. Not to mention, as he got closer to the mare, he noticed she had rounded sides like Berit and Vihaan when she left him. She was pregnant? This only got better and better. He snorted softly to himself as he waited for her to notice him. When she did finally notice him, a smile tugged on her lips and she made her way to him, looking every bit like she was going to make a new friend. A single ear flicked back in uncertainty as he waited on her. She looked like she had a pure soul and a good heart, reminding him all the more of his daughter, Paisley and a new ache found its way into his chest.

She asked if he was Cain and he nodded his great head in confirmation. "I am." She said she was glad he stayed behind, which made his brow lift in puzzlement. Why would she want him to stay here? Most leaders wanted a fresh start, not potential threats to their leadership. Unless she realized how vulnerable she was with her age and her current condition. She apologized then and promised she would be good to the herd. She brought up a mate and his ears laid back at the thought of another stallion being here. He'd become more tolerable and found a trusted friend and ally in his Second, Scarecrow, but this stallion would be a stranger and probably wouldn't take kindly to the former leader still being here. She asked if he'd met him yet and Cain shook his head with a small scowl. "No, can't say I have." She then gave her name as Galexia de Angel. Cain had come to find the tradition of naming your parents after your own name tiresome and a mouthful but he figured maybe it would be nice to have someone be proud to be your kid. He found himself wondering if Paisley used his name sometimes.

He didn't know the name Angel so he remained impassive as she said it, only looking at her in further curiosity. She said she came from the shore and named off someone he did know, though. Of at least knew of, Xiomara. He tilted his head. "I have heard rumors of the strong warrior mare, though I don't know if I've had the pleasure to meet her yet." He wondered sometimes about the lone mare who dared to try to raid Geneva from him so long ago but she never gave her own name, only Warsaw's. If any could match the description of Xiomara, he thought that mare might but he didn't have confirmation. He dipped his head in acknowledgement. "Well, I wish I could say it's a pleasure to meet you, Galexia, but I'm sure you know the tension you've brought to my herd with the shift in command. Of course, I brought it on myself by being absent and I take that burden squarely upon myself. If you allow it, I'd like to stay with my herd. I promised my protection and though I know it's not my duty anymore, I'd like to offer whatever help I can to make sure they are all taken care of."

He studied the young mare's expression for a moment. She was pretty and elegant, reminding him more of Vihaan and Harlequin in build, but she was certainly bold or she wouldn't have claimed the Desert in the first place. What would she allow of him while she was here? He needed to figure out how to get things back to the way they were supposed to be, but he couldn't see how. He couldn't bring himself to fight a heavily pregnant young mare. It just didn't seem right. Yet he couldn't guarantee the safety of his herd members while he didn't have power. What a pickle he was in.
