He felt that most of the herd would be angry with him for such a foul move. Of all things and all the battles he'd fought for them already, for him to taken down by a young pregnant mare just by being absent. It was almost laughable, if he didn't consider it so pathetic. He should have been here. He expected Harlequin's anger, her feeling of betrayal. He expected her to either laugh at his fallible nature of yell at him till her voice quit for letting such a thing happen. When she smiled and nickered back to him, he felt his chest tighten with affection, thinking it too good to be true that she would forgive him for allowing strangers to come and take this land they'd built for themselves so easily. Of course, she probably expected him to just go challenge straight away and take it right back, yet his own hesitation to do so scared even himself. Every time he looked at that mare, he saw his own daughter and the thought of raising a tooth or hoof against her paralyzed him. It felt heartless. Was this the trade off for being the stallion he was now?

His painted beauty allowed him to approach and he took comfort from flaring his nostrils to inhale her sweet perfume. She still smelled of him and that gave him hope. When her ears laid back, he stiffened, unsure what to expect. Her head reached out and then she murmured his name and he felt his body relax, melting into her soft voice. She was usually so firey, so spirited, that to have her be soothing was both surprising and all the more pleasant because of it. If she could be okay with this for now, maybe it wouldn't be so bad. She curled her body against him and he sighed at the contact, his own tail swinging out to wrap around her delicious curves. At her question, he let out a soft chuckle before giving a harsh snort. "You could say that." He followed her gaze to where Galexia and her so-called mate grazed. His ears laid back again at the thought of another stallion being here, someone he didn't know and didn't trust.

His gaze fell to the sand. "I don't know if I can fight her, Harlequin." The words were hard to get out, but he needed her to know. Finally his gaze lifted, shame and guilt swimming in their depths as he waited for her rejection, her disappointment. "When I look at her, I see Paisley." He was sure she'd remember Primrose and his daughter. The herd might never have been very close where the mares were concerned, but everyone usually learned everyone else's names, and it was no secret how he felt about all his children. Would Harlequin understand though? Would she condemn him for it?
