It's what he says, not how he says it. The man is totally dishonest. So much so, he embarasses himself. I get the feeling from listening to him that he's sorry he ever decided to run. I think if he could withdraw without looking like the fool, he would. His character seems to be a mix of all three of Dorothy's companions in the Wizard of Oz--the scarecrow, the tin man, and the cowardly lion--with a little bit of the wizard thrown in.
