FIRE BURNS WHERE IT FALLS

Sidika’s assertion was a true one and despite the relatively short amount of time she had spent among these dunes with Maslakhat, she was the sort who had good instincts. They had undoubtedly served her well so far, as they would surely keep doing as their time together continued while raising their son. Thus, the golden bay Akhal-Teke’s confidence does not come from any kind of misplaced emotional deluge like the responsibility of new fatherhood. He has seen and experienced enough to know she was plenty capable and keen to be successful.

“No,” Maslakhat replied simply in agreement, his eyes far away as he recalled it. His first was a son as well, though he never rightly knew what became of him—only that he existed—sprung from the loins of an Akhal-Teke mare named Banal’ras, whom he’d met alone in the Crossing what seemed like ages ago. Their encounter had been a brief but welcome distraction from all the pressure he’d been under then—a time when Valve had been wielding her strong influence over the whole of Salem.

“It was long ago,” he offered, returning his mind to the present, not wishing for the distractions of the past to interfere with the future. “There are more important things to attend to now,” he finished, returning his thoughtful gaze to Geçersiz who happily bounced around, before once more nursing happily at Sidika’s side.

Falling into a comfortable silence again, he considered how he might ensure Geçersiz’s success. He knew it was pertinent that he understand his family line, and the importance of carrying on the legacy of his sire and the sire before him. His own father, Kiral, had made mistakes—one very large mistake in particular—that Maslakhat had thankfully been able to correct. Yusuf’s death had finally allowed Maslakhat the freedom to continue to build what his grandfather Zenith had started. Geçersiz did not know it yet, but a certain kind of strength ran in his blood. The strength to endure and do what must be done; to provide and protect all those who were born of sand and sun.
