Miserable rain all day but excellent for feeder birds and feeder watching. Before sunrise this morning our regulars: 8 Blue Jays, 5 Black-capped Chickadees, 5 White-breasted Nuthatches, 4 sparrow species—4 Song, 5 White-throated, 1 White-crowned. About 3 Downy Woodpeckers, 3 Hairies working on the peanut feeders. Four Mourning Doves, here since the spring. A Yellow-rumped Warbler sampled a piece of corn from a tray feeder, spit it out and moved on. Only one intermittent Goldfinch. A brilliant Red-breasted Nuthatch, dropped by a few times—most have moved south. Two Brown Creepers, not feeder birds but with the chickadees passed through. Two Dark-eyed Juncos (a sparrow) initially, but with diligent applications of mixed birdseed below the sunporch, the flock had swelled to twenty by evening. Only one non-feeder bird—a Raven=15 bird species. About 8 Chipmunks, 4 Red Squirrels, and the best sighting by far, a huge Otter in the bay. (My first in two years not counting the dead one still on the highway at West Gravenhurst.) Now missing Fox Sparrow, Tree Sparrow, Red-bellied Woodpecker for my yard list but with Covid forcing us to hibernate here, I have my hopes up. Replies: There have been no replies.
