comfort me with apples, for I am sick of love

Solomon
Their relationship existed in a stasis of give and take, both striving to find the middle ground between their opposing viewpoints. It was not that Solomon felt she was incapable of traveling; she was clearly in good health despite the extra person her body was nourishing. Nor did he that she would intentionally put herself or the babe in harm's way.

But this trust that he had in Çiçek did not extend to strangers.

As much as he could place his faith in Çiçek to do the right thing, and make all the right choices, he could not force those around her to do the same. It was not too far fetched for him to imagine another stallion catching sight of her beauty and attempting to capture her, willing or not. After all, he had considered it himself when he had first spoken to the beautiful spotted mare and her dark companion.

And in truth, were it only herself that she was risking, and if her body was not encumbered by the child they'd created, he might have allowed it without protest despite his worry. She had spoken of her wandering heart, and of her need for adventure. Solomon had not forgotten her pleas, but nor had he forgotten his own past experience. He'd been taught, and even witnessed firsthand, the brutality of territorial stallions against pregnant mares. Stallions too blinded by war and grief and anger to see clearly. Stallions that struck out at pregnant mares to prevent the children they carried from ever taking their first breaths. The ones who did so out of uncontrollable emotion or revenge were bad enough, but even beneath that layer of scum had lurked those that acted intentionally, and those that sought harm for no other reason than the sick sort of pleasure it gave them.

It was these creatures who he did not trust, not his flower girl.

Obediently he lowers his head so that she can run her teeth along his crest, his hide shivering at the decadent feel of it. How often had he imagined having the time and pleasure to simply indulge in her company in this manner?

Her taunting earns a low chuckle that rumbles from deep in his chest, and the edges of his eyes crinkle in delight as he presses the grin on his lips into her shoulder. He very fondly remembered their time spent together in the small nook of the Ridge as they became acquainted with one another's bodies.

At his question, her face falters the same way his confidence had and he wants to scoop her close to him again so that she won't think his concern to be based in a lack of affection. A million answers swirl through his mind at her flippant comment - some of them are barbed and accusatory, frustrated that she had made him promise to wait until summer even while she freely opted to do otherwise. Some of them are almost wistful, his mind willing and able to concoct scenarios in which Faolain and Rivaini's attention proved inferior to his own.

Ultimately he settles on simply being grateful she was here with him, now. He had missed the first time the child moved, and the first time she realized that she was pregnant, but he would not miss her other firsts. Together they would see their child take it's first steps, at home, in the Cove.

Swallowing his pride, he murmurs an assent, putting aside the noise in his head to simply appreciate that they were together. "I do."

Mirth returns to his face as she taunts him again, and he tosses his head as if affronted despite the twinkle in his eyes. Boldly, he stretches forward to whisper huskily in her ear before dashing in the general direction of the Cove, hoping to bait her into a game of chase. "Never."
