FIRE BURNS WHERE IT FALLS

Movement in his peripheral vision distracted him from the conversation with Collision, and he twisted an ear and tilted the tip of his nose around his shoulder to see the seal brown subject of it, making her presence known to them both in an intentional fashion. The words that came from her lips are a bold incantation, spiced with mystery and sharp like thorns as they uttered forth. Maslakhat’s eyes glittered with reverence as he looked upon her, stepping to the side as she clicked her teeth at the other stallion—delivering a warning and a greeting, all wrapped into one carefully prescribed motion. Shenzi was nothing if not deliberate.

She clarified in the common tongue and Maslakhat’s eyes flicked back to Collision to gauge his response to this. He was interested in how he might adjust his demeanor with the bold brown mare before him now—if he would grovel, beg for forgiveness or attempt to explain himself as he did with the golden bay ‘Teke. For now, Maslakhat has said enough, and it was not his place to do anything more than support Shenzi in delivering whatever fate she decided was fitting for him.

He did wonder how he managed to fight in a war unscathed, a curiosity she wasted no time in calling attention to. Maslakhat believed him when he said he was done with the Lagoon, but it was quite possible that he’d left out some more relevant details with respect to what he had actually done, if not fight. Perhaps then, Collision would not be fit to play a role in the retribution he knew she demanded. If he could leave her for a war he never intended to commit to fighting in, he held little honor and an abundance of fear.

“See for yourself,” he replied at last of the other stallion.
