He couldn't remember a more stressful Fall in the desert than this one. Not because of his own restless energy and the all too appetizing scents of his herd mares, but because the mares were as restless as he was, everyone vying for that suddenly coveted lead mare spot. Now, he didn't resent any of them for their ambitions. In fact, his chest heaved with pride for the mares who found themselves as worthy when he knows many of them didn't think so much of themselves not too long ago. Like Melisma, his little night flower. She was the mare who only came out after the sun went down. She avoided most interactions, and believed herself inferior to most others. Now look at her. She had challenged another mare to get him the desert back when he could not. She announced her confidence to the herd as a candidate for the lead mare position and he had no doubt that she could do the job.

Just as he had no doubts in Berit. She was his saving grace when Carbon's life was on the line, and she never asked for anything in return except a face place to hang her head with her son, Vulcan. She had a heart of gold and didn't consider herself much to look at, but since then, he hoped he had opened her up to the concept of being both attractive and so much more than just an amazing mother. No one could doubt her skills with raising children. Both Carbon and Vulcan had thrived under her discipline and care and now his son, Enoch, got the same honor. Cain watched him glisten in the sun, the very epitome of a god, and couldn't be more proud of what he and Berit had produced. All his sons were going to be great some day. He had no doubt. And he knew those three had her to thank for it.

The others like Chimeras and Cerosi were no less coveted by Cain because they didn't act for the position. Chimeras was proving herself quite the caregiver when it came to his sons and the Vanner stallion had noted her genuine concern for their activities. She didn't mind playing with them and listening to them ramble on about everything they did or wanted to do and it humbled him to see such compassion for others. Cerosi was quiet but her gentle demeanor had a way of soothing his inner beast and making him want to protect her from all that would seek to harm her. She was youthful and could have the world in the palm of her hand yet for now, at least, she chose to stay here and call the desert home and he felt honored in that.

Through it all, Harlequin was his constant reminder to lead with a clear head and an open heart. She was his anchor when he thought he had none and he couldn't be more grateful to the painted mare for her continued support. The black and white stallion hadn't missed seeing the arabian slink off into the ocean only to come back much later smelling of Luthien and the mare who never seemed to fully leave his thoughts. His curiosity was killing him on what they might have talked about, but he didn't want to come off as desperate so he held his tongue. They could continue to be friends. After all, they were herd mates for a long time. Perhaps Harlequin just missed her and wanted to catch up. It might not have been about him at all. He tried not to think about it while the rest of the discussions went on. Throughout it all, Harlequin gave her support where needed and never failed to speak her mind.

He couldn't help but more cautious at watching Melisma and Harlequin more closely, if only cause he knew they might carry precious cargo. This would be Melisma's first time, and he was worried about her and knew he would keep an extra close eye on her. This would be Harlequin's second, but he would be no less vigilant in case she needed anything. As if she knew she was on his mind, the stallion pricked his ears to the sudden resounding bugle that echoed through the golden dunes of the desert. Smirking to himself, he tossed his head with an answering whinny before he tore off in a ground eating gallop to reach her. It didn't take him long to pick out her graceful form and as he got closer, the stallion slowed to a walk and snorted as he lifted a brow at her in question. "Yes, dear?" He purred in a gravelly tone as his eyes twinkled teasingly. He couldn't help it. Harlequin always had a way of bringing out his flirtacious side.
