Melisma had not expected to be found out in the silence of first morning. But as the stallion’s fresh scent filled her nose, dread instantly squeezed her heart. Spinning to face the brute, she was struck by the gold of his coat, and the familiarity of his cologne. The Lagoon?! Panic instantly flooded her, but just as she lunged to make her escape, he was already cutting her off.
“No!” She screamed back, pinning her ears into her ebony mane. She would not be rushed into the sea by a lagoon thug. But as he reared, lashing his front legs at her, Melisma became acutely aware of more than just her safety. The precious cargo was now in danger, and it caused the black mare to take a step back. Would she really risk her child to be defiant?
Tears began to stream down her dark face, and her legs quivered with fear. Memories of her youth suddenly began to flood her mind that she had tried to suppress. The Lagoon; would she ever be rid of that horrid place? “You will regret this! My stallion will come for me!” She spat at the stallion, but then turned into the sea. The chill of the water swept over her, and her legs lashed in the current to try and keep her baby safe from the brute as he drove her from her home.
