bring me back to life... birth

It was in the early morning hours that the contractions started. She woke with a groan as her body started convulsing and readying itself for the task ahead. Sighing, she looked around, but Ruger wasn't close by. He was probably doing some patrol or grazing. She wouldn't call for him, at least not yet. Slowly, she pulled herself to her hooves, another contraction coming through fast and about taking her to her knees again. She gasped around the pain, her eyes squeezing shut as tears started to sting them. It wasn't this bad last time, when she gave birth to Ryder. Why was it so painful now?

She tried not to think about it, though, opening her eyes and pushing herself forward. She needed to find cover before the baby came. Easier said than done. She went down on one knee at one point, her legs buckling as another fierce contraction rippled through her. She was already panting, sweat starting to glisten on her coat as she forced herself back up and kept going. Only once she reached the cover of the trees did she allow herself to fall to the ground with a heavy thump. She was sure she would bruise from the fall, but couldn't think about that now. Her body was already telling her to push, but she already felt so weak. Gasping through the pain, she started to push, but it felt like she was getting nowhere. Her hooves scrabbled at the ground, kicking up grass and roots as she kept pushing and kept trying.

After hours, her body was soaked in sweat and she was still no closer to giving birth. During one of the pushes, she felt something tear and had to restrain herself from screaming at the searing pain. She felt the warmth around her backside and knew it was blood. Yet, where was the baby? Her heart was in her throat as she finally got up the energy to call out for Ruger. Usually she would never make him be witness to something so violent as this, but she needed him right now. Her body was still telling her to push so once that was done, she continued, even as her energy ran low and her breathing was all but hyperventilating. Why was there no progress? Something was wrong.

She somehow found the energy to get up and started pacing, hoping the movement would help things along. But another contraction soon had her back on the ground. With a groan of pain, she rolled and thrashed, hoping to jar something loose inside, something that was holding her baby prisoner. Around the time she was thinking of just passing out, a miracle seemed to happen and when she made herself push, she felt a release. Gasping around the new pain of knowing there was something coming out, she struggled and thrashed her legs against the ground once more as she found the energy to keep going. Soon enough, there was a child on the ground, already struggling to get out of the sac. But did she have the energy to help?

Evanescence rolled to her stomach with another groan, staring at the child for a moment, but her motherly instincts kicked in and she knew she needed to go to it. Panting with every breath, she ripped the sac from around the foal and began to clean it. The black and white spots made it look like a miniature version of her mate and when it turned its eyes up to her, they were a brilliant amber like Ruger. Evanescence smiled around her own exhaustion, continuing to clean the filly before she nudged her, trying to get her up to nurse. The sooner she took care of that, the sooner she could collapse as her body was already threatening to do. The filly soon gave in and stood to her hooves, shaking out her coat before she started to nurse. Sighing in relief, Evanescence hung her head, her legs wobbling beneath her.

Blood still dripped down her legs but she couldn't think about that. As soon as the child stopped nursing, she felt her body give out. She collapsed to the ground with a thud and a grunt, turning her gaze on her daughter. "Forgive me, my darling." Then she closed her eyes and let the darkness take her.

OOC: Still breathing, just passed out and extremely weak for anyone who finds her.
