here to save the princess

His first hint was the sound of hood beats running, but the bay stallion was slow to lift his head, figuring it was just young horses playing or a high spirited mare wanting to burn some energy. The last thing he expected was to see a sturdy blue roan mare heading right for him. His ears pricked in curiosity, eyes widening, but he held his ground, unsure of her intentions. She wasn't exactly charging at full speed but she definitely wasn't lazy about her gait, either. And that smile on her lips...something about it was off to him. He gave out a questioning nicker, hoping she'd realize she needed to slow down a little or they'd both be on the ground in a minute.

When she screamed, his whole body stiffened instinctively, his ears flicking back in distaste of the sound. That wasn't a happy sound. Okay, so she didn't come in peace, apparently. But why? He let out a harsh snort, his nostrils flaring to taste her scent. She didn't smell of the islands, at least not recently. What was her purpose in coming here? And why had she targetted him? He wasn't small or shrimpy by any means. He was taller than her, just not quite as stocky. He was a rare balance of speed and power while she seemed to lean more toward the power side of things.

He still expected her to slow down as she got closer, so when she didn't, it took him by surprise. He still couldn't quite believe she was attacking him, cause why should she? He was a nobody. He had no ties to the other islands or herds. He and his mate were loners, living on the Crossing. Why should that offend anyone? When she collided with his shoulder, her let out a squeal of pain and shock, his neck instinctively snaking around in retaliation. He aimed bites at her neck and shoulder, whatever he could reach as she sent him stumbling back from the recoil. That was definitely going to bruise. His front end skidded around in a turn from the momentum and he tripped as his leg gave out a little from the shock of the impact.

His ears flicked at the sound...was she laughing? He found nothing about the situation funny. In fact, he was getting quite irritated. The mare spun around to face him again and he curled his lips back in warning this time, favoring his front leg a little where his shoulder was throbbing. Man, that was a hard hit. She rushed him again and he gnashed his teeth, trying to scare her off, but it didn't work. She reared up this time and he jerked his head out of reach, not wanting to get kicked in the face. He felt her leg hook over his neck and he started squirming and curling his neck around, trying to dislodge it. When her teeth found purchase on his skin, he squealed again in defiance and pain, his own teeth trying to get her chest or front legs now, anything he could reach in this awkward position.

His neck was burning from whatever damage she was doing and he couldn't stand it. Snorting and blowing, he threw his back leg out to the side, trying to kick at her own legs and maybe take them out from under her. A single ear flicked at her sudden silky words, asking him to beg. Instead, a growl whispered from his chest as he threw his weight toward her in another attempt to throw her off balance or at least get her off his neck where the pressure was too much on his throbbing shoulder. "Bite me. I don't beg." He growled the words through clenched teeth as he continued to try to bite at whatever he could reach.

When her teeth clamped on his ear next, he again gave another scream. He knew the bliss of release was just a trick and so he didn't take it for granted, immediately stumbling away from her so he could turn to face her straight-on this time. His sides were heaving with effort and blood dripped down his neck and into his ear from her bites. He shook his head, trying to rid himself of the annoyance but alas, it wasn't going anywhere any time soon. At least, she didn't manage to tear his ear off. That would have sucked. But it felt nice and ripped and it was throbbing something awful from all that pulling. Hopefully, he'd still be able to hear out of it. "When I said 'bite me', I didn't mean literally." He muttered the words as he scowled at the mare, his eyes narrowed in challenge.

When the mare moved to get close again, he stiffened and leaned away, his nostrils wrinkling in disapproval as she dared to curl herself about him like they were lovers. He felt her teeth at his flanks and he whipped around, teeth gnashing again in warning. Her words confused him. Disappoint her? "That may be all you're getting from me. Certifiable isn't my type and I'm spoken for, so what do you want?" He watched her intensely, ready for any sign that she was going to attack again. He was hurting, but he'd never take a beating lying down.
