Muskrat out for a stroll

Around noon today, a Muskrat decided to go for a stroll along the new snowmobile trail adjacent to the Chickadee Trail. It had come out of a wet area by cell 4 and walked atop the snowpack towards us at the pipeline. It found a place to hide briefly while some snowmobiles went past, but soon came back out and followed the trail across the pipeline, heading west. Instead of veering to the right to follow the Chickadee Trail, it chose the new snowmobile route that passes right through the large marshy area and along the creek. The Muskrat seemed to be walking with purpose, not hesitating at all to explore, as it continued its journey out of our sight. It seems a bit early for mating season, but perhaps it was following a scent carried on the wind? Or maybe it was an immature one "dispersing" as mentioned in the second reference below. Nevertheless, it was a beautiful sunny day for a stroll. (Bracebridge)
