Forest Bird Monitoring Sites Available Posted on March 5, 2021 at 06:54:16 PM by Don Scanlan
Two FBMProgram sites are available in the Blueberry Plains woodlands at Wasaga Beach. Red Oak- White Pine being dominate.
For the last three decades I have done these sites; but now other commitments take me elsewhere.
Administered by Birds Canada, the focus is to survey birds in forests using a Point Count method, during the breeding season.
Each forest block is a site with five stations. Sampling is done twice a year. This is necessary to get the full range of species there, as some may show up only in one date range. Surveying is done early in the morning and I did both sites in a morning.
Requirements:
Volunteer must be able to identify birds by song as most are not seen, being in the canopy or at some distance.
Volunteer must be able to traverse rolling forested sand dunes. One such dune is about seventy feet high. Not overly strenuous.
I can accompany the volunteer through the sites some day pre survey.
Your data will be also used for the current Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas.
Should you find a nest, the data can be used for the Ontario Nest Records
This is a good long term program and is a satisfying and rewarding effort.
