She was a flicker in the corner of his eye, darting fleetly through the moon-washed wheatgrass, her golden coat a glimmer of light under the evening sky. The stars twinkled above, pinholes in a great purple-velvet blanket that was strewn endlessly above them. Irshi knew he would eventually find her here, her favorite place; the meadow was as much her home as any other earthly realm, but if there was anywhere that she would be most likely to be found—this was it, and he knew that.
His voice stilled her motion suddenly, and she revealed herself the way a cat might when sighted unexpectedly—her ears tipped forward and her amber eyes gleamed wide and bright as the silver disc above them. She stared deep into his dark eyes as he drew closer, murmuring his endearment in their shared tongue. Straightening her posture, she flicked her stark-white tail and stretched her lips into a small smile. Only her father would speak to her as such.
“You have, benim ayım,” she affirmed.
She was thankful for his persistence. Irshi was not meant to be contained for the pleasures of one or two faces, like a firefly in a jar. Her free-spirited nature was evident from the start, and despite the selfish desires of parents to keep their little ones protected behind something like glass, they had to know that she was never really theirs to keep.
Still, she was glad to see him again. It was as certain as the turning of world beneath their feet, and the time had come for the revolution to complete, just as soon as it would begin again without pause.
“Do you intend to share your wish? Or is it your will what brings you?”
