He didn't let them get far before going after them. He wasn't needed to supervise Cerosi's talk with Ironclad, and he wanted to make sure Melisma and Pheobe were okay after the swim. Snorting to clear his nostrils, the large Vanner galloped across the dunes until he saw her familiar dark back glistening in the sun. She seemed to be herding the little red filly toward the shade. Cain scowled to himself, wondering how Pheobe was going to adapt to the hot Desert climate after her time in the Lagoon and on the Crossing. Would she learn to like it here? Would she come to see it as home?

The stallion was thoughtful after having to say good bye to one of his younger sons, Carbon. It was hard losing that last link to Geneva, but he knew it wouldn't be the last time he'd see his midnight son. Carbon would be sure to find his way back home eventually. The draft stallion just hoped that he would take something good from his time with the bachelors. At least, Carbon wasn't going into it blind. He knew already what the Lagoon was about. Apparently, he'd already run into the leader himself on the Crossing before and wasn't impressed. That had made Cain chuckle. Usually Carbon was in awe of everyone when he first met them, but the golden stallion from the Lagoon had talked about stealing mares and immediately set off red flags on his son's radar. Carbon might had been naive to some things in his first year, but he knew enough that mares didn't like to be forced to go somewhere. He was already a gentleman and Cain couldn't be more proud.

He would miss his son terribly, but knew he would look after himself while in the Lagoon. Meanwhile, Cain had other children to watch over and raise, with the help of his oldest son, Akello. It was nice to have him back in the Desert. Somehow, it made the weight of the leadership not fall so heavily on his own shoulders. He knew Akello wasn't asking for a rank or any kind of title, but he knew his son wouldn't hesitate to help out if it was needed, either, and that in itself was a huge relief.

Having Melisma back in the Desert was also a godsend, and Cain didn't want to take it for granted. He threw his head up with a whinny, calling out to the dark mare and his daughter as he slowed to a trot and headed their way. Aching his thick neck, he pranced and whipped his tail. The joy to see them was clear in his twinkling eyes but they softened with affection when they landed on Melisma, knowing she was probably beating herself up about charging after Ironclad. He didn't blame her for her actions. In fact, he admired the courage and heart she seemed to have found. He didn't know if it was starting when she stepped up to Galexia before, or if she was just maturing into the mare he knew she could be, but either way, he loved the way she protected both her young and the Desert with everything in her. As the Gypsy stallion got closer, he gave a softer whicker and lowered his head, reaching out tentatively to Melisma, his eyes almost apologetic as he waited for her permission to touch. He only hoped she wasn't angry with him for intervening with Ironclad.
