Berit's scream was the first thing to alert him, and the Vanner was quick to tear off across the Desert before the echoes of that cry could even carry over the dunes. His heart thudded wildly in his chest as the stallion lunged for everything he was worth, his hooves scattering the sand like smoke and glass as he surged forward for everything he had, trying to get to her and whatever was making her create that angry sound. He had to believe something was wrong, some kind of danger had found her. He didn't know if she'd managed to give birth or not yet, but he wanted to be there for her either way. As the Gypsy stallion galloped over the final dune, he saw the three figures ahead and somehow time seemed to slow down. The charging brown figure could only be his beautiful Berit, a fury in her eyes like he'd never seen as she lashed out at a smaller stallion.

He didn't outrightly recognize the stallion in question or his herd scent at first, but the smaller figure by the stallion was no doubt a young foal and Cain knew instantly that could only mean one thing. Berit had given birth and now someone was endangering her foal. But no sooner could he reach out for another stride than he saw the horrible moment as Berit clashed with the stallion. Where there should have been a heated collision, it was horrifyingly brief and the silence that followed all but stopped his very heart. His brown eyes glistened with a mixture of anger and terror as the stallion turned his back on Berit, both back hooves reaching out blindly in what should have been a blustering attempt to keep her out of reach. But instead, he had to watch as if stuck in a glass box, forever out of reach and unable to help, as the hooves hit with a dull thump and Berit fell like a limp doll to the ground.

Even as the stallion turned back to see what he'd done, Cain was already screaming his own mixture of pain and anguish, his eyes seeing red as he thundered down on them, urging his legs to move faster so he could be there to take his revenge. But the stallion was too fast, already disappearing over the dunes before the large tobiano could reach the mare's stoic form. Tears were already glistening in his eyes as he slid to a stop, his nostrils still flared, sides heaving, as he slowly reached his muzzle out to the beautiful sooty form. "Berit, my darling, I'm here. Berit....please..." His voice was a pleading song as he gently nudged at her velveteen muzzle, eyes watching for any sort of movement from her sides or her face.

A tear slid down his cheek as he took a second to look around for the colt and only when he sucked in the youth's familiar scent and knew he was safe did he turn his sole attention back on Berit. He knew now that Berit had a son and the stallion hadn't taken him. He also knew now that the stallion came from the Lagoon. He could smell the tang on the colt's coat and in the air still and even as his heart sunk with grief of what he could already see coming before him, he knew he would not turn a cheek to this.
