Woodcock and Snipe

We heard our first Wilson's Snipe tonight, winnowing over the farm fields on McArthur Sideroad in Washago, along with half a dozen Eastern Meadowlarks.
And back on the road at home, the American Woodcock was back on his favourite territory by our little roadside pond. I listened through 4 of its courtship cycles as the sky darkened. About 20 to 23 "peent" calls right on the shoulder of the road, followed by a launch into the sky to perform its twittering song in broad circles, and then going silent as it dropped back to the ground to begin the show again.
