He could only hope his words meant as much to her as they did to him. The L word was still hard for him, especially after getting the courage to say it to Vihaan and she never said it back, or really even acknowledged that she heard him, but he knew she did. She still made her decision and left him to be in the Prairie. He'd started to think he might never feel like that again for someone. He cared for the mares in the Desert, but loving someone the way he loved Vihaan only tore him apart in the end. Was it really worth it? Maybe if he gave into his feelings with Melisma, it would be different.

She was loyal to the Desert to a fault. She stood up for its protection just as much as he did. She proved as much by standing up to Galexia and then to Ironclad when she saw him on the borders. Even with a foal at her side, she didn't hesitate to charge, and he admired that about her and so much more. She was so strong, so resilient. She didn't let the Lagoon hurt her shine. He wouldn't have been able to forgive himself if anything had happened to her there. He was glad he was able to get her away when he did, so she could enjoy her freedom on the Crossing with Pheobe to recover. The best part came when she was recovered and decided to come back to the Desert, on her own. He didn't have to come ask after her; he didn't even have to wonder. Somehow, he just knew she was coming home.

And she didn't let him down. It was a relief to know of her loyalty to him and the Desert. It reminded him that sometimes, putting himself fully on the line for someone was worth it. Maybe in the end, they wouldn't always hurt him. He was slowly gathering more mares like that. Harlequin would never leave him if she could help it. Chimeras was sticking it out so far, though he wished sometimes he could get to know her better. Even Cerosi was coming out of her shell more and more to seek him out and make herself known. His herd was small, but it was coming together. Quality over quantity, if you ask him.

She told him that if it wasn't for Phoebe, she wouldn't have gone with the stallion and Cain nodded his head in acknowledgement. "I know." He assured her, wanting her to know he didn't doubt that she could have fought the stallion off herself if there wasn't another life at stake. He looked at Pheobe's sleeping body and his eyes lit up with relief, glad that she wasn't harmed at all during all that. Then she said she hoped he understood her not wanting a child this Fall and he smiled affectionately at Melisma, reaching out to gently trail his lips across her neck. "It's okay. Each child is precious and I am honored for any you are willing to give me." He didn't want her or any of the Desert mares to ever feel pressured to give him children. That was never in the agreement when they made the Desert their home.

He glanced over her body, taking in how her coat gleamed and her muscles looked sturdy and healthy. She had needed some recovery after her ordeal in the Lagoon and he would have never tried to push another foal on her so soon. He wanted her at one hundred percent before anything else.

Her next words took his breath away for a moment, though. She said she wanted to give him another child some day, a child born in the Desert. His eyes practically glowed as he smiled. "I look forward to it." He finally breathed on a happy sigh.
