He always prided himself on knowing all his herd members the best that he could so it was a blow to his own ego to know so little about this young stallion who had been living here right under his nose. Of course, out of respect to Scarecrow, he would have never pushed his presence on any of the stallion's herd, but he wanted to do better and remedy his own mistake as soon as possible by getting to know Aries now. The young stallion seemed eager to know him as well, though he still seemed a little nervous of Cain. The Vanner could tell Aries aimed to impress and he liked that motivation the stallion had to prove himself. It would make him a viable candidate for the Second spot if he was interested.

His smile deepened as Aries seemed to sag in relief when he told him he could stay. He liked that others seemed to think of this place as home just as he did. The chestnut offered a smile but his face sobered just as quickly when Cain mentioned looking for another Second. The younger stallion seemed nervous again instantly but politely thanked him before admitting that he was interested in the position. Cain gave a nod. "Good to know. I'd like to watch your activity with the rest of the herd then. I know Scarecrow and I had an understanding with keeping our herds separate, but as you have made me realize, that needs to change. I'd like to know all the members of my herd, even those with my Second. I want my herd members to know you as well, so they can look to you in times I might not be there. Does that seem fair?"

He pricked his ears for the stallion's answer, wanting his input in case he had any questions or needed to add something. It seemed like a good first step to make sure the stallion could handle the responsibility.
