What is Killing the Snapping Turtles in Cell Four?

On May 01, Will Lockhart and family, Domenic Stones and I observed four dead Snapping Turtles about one foot above the water line along Cell Two, Bracebridge lagoons They seemed freshly dead, yet to be consumed by vultures. These animals are near indestructible: they can live to 100 years. They rarely bask and emerge from water in June to lay eggs.
During the past two weeks we have warm days alternating with four nights of below-freezing temperatures: I suspect the turtles froze to death. But why were they out of the water? Or is there a better explanation for their mortality?
