I’ll get under your skin

The gray mare snorted and shook out her coat as she launched out of the cold ocean water and onto the mainland. What the heck was going on? The Dunes seemed to be changing hands faster than she could even meet the new leader. She was starting to get frustrated with all the change. She thought the Dunes was going to be her forever home, but maybe that was premature? Her best friend might still be there, but she hadn’t seen Sayyida in some time. Was she and her family still around the dunes? Corona thought about looking for them, but she needed to get away for a little bit first. Maybe she’d go back with a fresh outlook, but she hated losing the stability that the herd dynamics offered when Maslakhat was in charge.

When the brothers took over, she was okay with it, because she knew them and (for the most part) trusted them. Then Sayyida was in charge and that was okay, too, cause that was her best friend who invited her to the Dunes in the first place and who better to lead? But then Sayyida gave the power back to the brothers and again, that’s okay. But now strangers were coming in and claiming the land and it still seemed so lonely and barren. Where were all the horses that used to call the Dunes home?

Corona was a free spirit but she was also a social creature and hated all the time spent alone. She thought there was a moment with one of the brothers, but even they were hard to come by, now. She wasn’t even sure they were still in the Dunes. So where did that leave her? Just as alone as when she first came to the islands. Maybe it was time to reach outward. So that’s what she was doing. She made the swim to the mainland to see if there was still life on the other islands. Maybe she’d find a new place to call home, or maybe she’d end up swimming back to Salem. Either way, she welcomed the experience.

Her hooves beat a path through the dry grass and into the meadow. She stopped to lower her head, grabbing at the tall stalks but she wasn’t really that hungry. No, she was just restless.
