It was with quiet agony that Melisma had to watch the new member of the herd be taken away. To watch the pain that lingered on Cain’s face days after. At first, she worried it was a physical pain, but soon figured out it was his heart that hurt. The painted stallion had lost so much; didn’t he deserve a break? The black mare had not mastered the ways of comfort, wishing Berit had been here to help his ease his hurting. But no amount of wanting would bring the mare back, and Melisma knew she needed to try something.
“Cain…” she greeted softly when he had came back to the herd. Not far from them, Phoebe laid curled carefully upon the sands sound asleep. Her youthful heart thankfully did not know the pains both her parents had suffered. Given a secure home, a loving mother and father, to keep her innocent of all things that were bad. Melisma did not offer the stallion any other words, not sure what else to say. But she reached out to him, softly brushing her midnight lips against his cheek.
Behind the stallion, Melisma noticed the movement of Cerosi as she left the confines of her herd and her children. Odd, but she would not begrudge the mare for wanting some solitude not far from the herd. It was the way Akello carried himself after her, that pulled at the instincts within Melisma. “I will be back” she assured her stallion, before leaving him to trail after the two at a jog.
Before she could even reach them, the odd smell hit her nose that she had never smelt before. The predatory stench was clear though, making her hurry to the younger horses. Reaching them just as Akello called out for back up.
