I also knew tons of fans, Bennett, who never came back after the harassment by the players striking.
Particularly the casual fan base-which made jai alai a success. The crowd did not spike 3,000 in Milford Saturday vs Wednesday night due to avid fans, but due to casual fans. They were a giant part of huge pools, and made handicapping by avid fans easy to win from. Many times, they were bf/gf, or husband/wife, and having tires flattened or profanities screamed attending Bridgeport jai alai -drove them away from ALL frontons..permanently. Even w/o violence at Milford, its fan base post strike never was the same.
The players followed a leader who wanted the equivalent of fight to the end, even if we both go down. Well, you did. Are you happy with nowhere to play for the big salaries of the pre strike era?
Mission accomplished. One player I saw at diners and I told him their way to run a strike was doomed to fail was Sorozabal. So now he gets to watch his kids need new careers 10-15 years before he hung the cesta up, as the sport never recovered. He deserves it, as he was IMO Lasa's parrot, and nothing more.
