Meadow

Following a stranger through unknown lands did not seem like the best of ideas. But Espen didn’t know what else he had to lose, except for his life, which he didn’t think held too much value. Especially in a place like this. He hadn’t the slightest clue where he was, or who might live here. The only hope the stallion could muster, was that no one that he actually knew would find him. The rest of his strength was spent on putting one feathered hoof in front of the other. Dragging on behind the mare until she had come to a stop somewhere up ahead of him. Her single word reaching him one last time before he stood beside her.


Espen did not hesitate to step passed her and lower his head so that his pale lips could touch the cold flowing water. He sucked it down greedily; washing away the salt that still lingered in his mouth and burned in his throat. It soothed him from the moment it worked its way passed his lips till it hit his empty belly. When he’d finally taken his fill, Espen lifted his head to glance over at the playful colt. It caused his ears to tip forward curiously, not having seen such life in quite some time. Most were cowed close to their mother’s side and kept in a horde. Not allowed such personality or privilege.


Glancing over his shoulder then, Espen looked to the mare responsible. She had barely spoken; only using one word the entire time. Though he supposed it was more than he had offered since he hadn’t spoke at all. He didn’t dare to think she had done this simply from kindness, and he half expected her to make some kind of demand now that she had led him to fresh water. Regardless, Espen gave a small grateful nod of his head. Words were hardly necessary for him to be appreciative in a situation like this.
