September Pome

For all who care to read it:

AUTUMNAL EQUINOCTIONS

" For the days dwindle down, to a
precious few,
September November "
-- Weill, "September Song"

They were not long, those days of march to
classes,
The evenings' study, sweating out the grades,
Noon meal formations, sounding drums and
brasses,
The thumpty-thump of Worden Field parades

They were not long, those nights of long watch-
standing,
Cruising through seas, cold steel beneath our
feet,
Storming ashore, another combat landing,
Or viewing dawn arise, from pilot's seat

At turn of seasons, ancient and eternal,
We look back fondly on those clear vignettes,
Noting the times and places in our journal--
A cherished life, good as it ever gets.
