For all who care to read it:
AUTUMNAL EQUINOCTIONS
" … For the days dwindle down, to a
precious few,
September … November …"
-- Weill, "September Song"
They were not long, those days of march to
classes,
The evenings' study, sweating out the grades,
Noon meal formations, sounding drums and
brasses,
The thumpty-thump of Worden Field parades …
They were not long, those nights of long watch-
standing,
Cruising through seas, cold steel beneath our
feet,
Storming ashore, another combat landing,
Or viewing dawn arise, from pilot's seat …
At turn of seasons, ancient and eternal,
We look back fondly on those clear vignettes,
Noting the times and places in our journal--
A cherished life, good as it ever gets.
